The Gardiner Dam is located on the South Saskatchewan River which originates in the Rocky Mountains of southern Alberta and northwest Montana. The Gardiner Dam diverts water from the South Saskatchewan River into the Qu’Appelle River. The lake impounded by Gardiner Dam is known as Lake Diefenbaker. It is part of the South Saskatchewan River Project (SSRP) and is one of the largest embankment dams in the world. The East Side Pump Station is located at the northeast end of the lake and pumps water from Lake Diefenbaker to the M1 Canal.
