Wascana Park - Targeted Grazing Project -- 088074

The Provincial Capital Commission (PCC) is seeking out an experienced livestock manager/professional shepherd for the fourth year of the goat/sheep grazing project in the Wascana Centre. PCC will continue with theWascana Hill Overlook and surrounding area location, as well as the field north of First Nations University of Canada, the Old Native Prairie Restoration Site (ONPRS) to be the priority plots. The goal of this project is to assist in the landscape conversion by removing invasive plant species and restoring the areas to a functioning native prairie grassland habitat by utilizing a mixture of sheep and/or goats (the “livestock”) to graze on the vegetation. Grazing will occur on the chosen test plot in early June before the plants mature in mid-late summer. Thiswill target the goats/sheep on young, softer vegetation, allowing foraging to occur before some plants develop hairs or awns that are unpalatable to sheep and can get lodged in skin, mouth, nose, or eyes of livestock. A second grazing period will occur in late July to early August before the plants go to seed.
