Economic Analysis, Small Modular Reactors -- 8126
In December 2019, Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Ontario and New Brunswick, with Alberta joining in April 2021, to work cooperatively to advance development and deployment of new, innovative technology in nuclear power generation to provide emissions-free, affordable, reliable energy, while helping to unlock economic potential across Canada.
The utilities of the MOU provinces released a feasibility study that evaluated the technical and financial feasibility of SMRs in Canada, including Saskatchewan, but this study was focused specifically on SMRs as a power project and did not consider the additional opportunities and benefits that could result from SMRs.
This procurement will lead to a clearer understanding of the economic impacts associated with the potential opportunities that could result from SMRs in Saskatchewan. An external consultant with demonstrated knowledge of the nuclear industry and associated economic and emissions analysis is required. This procurement process will support a number of priority areas identified by the SMR Unit including: economy and emissions, research & development, education and training, and supply chain. The SMR Unit is in the early stages of exploring the potential for SMR development and deployment to support economic and population growth, and to help meet the challenges of climate change. The expected outcomes of this procurement will be used to inform the planning process including next steps, investments and decision making.
